If you aren’t a morning person, or you live with someone, or worse share a bed with someone who isn’t, you have been here. The alarm clock goes off but you or someone else hits the snooze button. Nine minutes later, it goes off again and the snooze button gets hit again. The cycle repeats for a while until you get around to waking the person in question up. This can lead to missed appointments, buses and other things. Let’s face it, the snooze button cause a lot more problems than it solves (not that an extra nine minutes solves anything).
So what to do? Why not get a different alarm clock that forces you out of bed? Enter the Clocky. Invented by Gauri Nanda, this clock puts an end to repeated use of the snooze button. The Clocky is a mobile robotic alarm clock. It tolerates one use of the snooze button but before a cycle can start, the Clocky proceeds to roll off the nightstand and rolls somewhere else in the room. This forces you to get out of bed and get moving. This alarm clock is loud but not so loud that it is excessively disturbing. It sounds more like R2D2 from Star Wars, than a loud honking alarm. It’s good enough to wake you up but it won’t wake up the entire apartment complex it’s also a durable clock. It can handle falls off a 3 foot tall nightstand. It tends to roll away far enough to make sure you do get out of bed. The clock is easy enough to turn off after you find it. You just push a button. The alarm clock is also simple to set. The clock also has a back light so if you need to get up really early (like before dawn), this alarm clock is still relatively easy to operate. The alarm clock comes with long lasting batteries (some users report them lasting more than a year).
The Clocky is great for a lot of people. If you have to be somewhere every day at an obscenely early hour, this product will help you get up to avoid being late. If you have kids, this is a great way to help them learn to get up in the morning without your help. You won’t have to constantly check on them to make sure they’re moving. The Clocky will cut down on missed buses and the extra trips that result. It’s a good money saver. Gadget lovers will like it because it’s a functional robot. It also comes in multiple colors so it will match any room décor. For what it does, the price is reasonable. It costs roughly $30 online.
This is not to say that the Clocky is a perfect product. While the Clocky does what it says on the box, that’s all it does. It doesn’t have radio functions. In retrospect, this could be a good thing if you are giving this to a child you do not want listening to certain radio stations. However, if you are expecting a clock that will allow you to check the weather or traffic patterns before you go out, the Clocky will not replace your clock radio. If you want to play music the company also makes a clock called the Tocky, which can play MP3 files. More problematically, the Clocky can get wedged into or under things. This may not be a good buy if you have a bad back or are disabled.
However, it’s still a good pick otherwise. If the minor flaws above are something you can live with, and you’re sick of the morning ritual of a snooze button being hit over and over, this is the clock for you.
